Description
Caroni was established in 1918 and can be found in the centre of Trinidad's Caroni plains. It is a single estate distillery and possesses its own sugar plant. In the very early days they used a cast iron pot still, which in later years was replaced with a single column style still. Caroni became famous for its very distinctive heavy style of rum. A year after the distillery closed in 2004 Italian raconteur Luca Gargano headed to Trinidad and came across the derelict distillery. On a photoshoot, he stumbled across a warehouse full of Caroni barrels and in the next few years, the barrels were purchased.
The Tortuga No.1 is the first partnership of East Asia Whisky Co and The Sea Turtle Conservancy to prevent sea turtles from disappearing. It is a 22 Year old rum from a single cask #2286, bottled in 2021 at 66.1%.
